With China emerging as potentially the largest film market in the world, the Montreal World Film Festival has taken the bull by the horns and has invited key industry figures to meet during its event later this month. The Festival has announced the inaugural China Film Business Week, which will take place within the context of the event’s parallel Film Market (August 23 – September 3).
“The aim is to bring the burgeoning Chinese film industry on a permanent basis to North America,” explained MWFF president Serge Losique. “This is where the west will meet the east, where decision makers of the Chinese film industry will meet their western counterparts. All facets of the Chinese film industry will be in attendance in Montreal – co-production, distribution, acquisition, along with a wide range of representatives of Chinese television and related media.” “Ever since its founding in 1977, the Montreal World Film Festival has been recognized as a pioneer in bringing Chinese films to the attention of western movie lovers,” Losique continued. “Now China is opening its markets to western film and media and it is the appropriate time for us to reciprocate. The future of the world film industry depends on a healthy exchange of product and ideas.”
