Tribute To Martin Scorsese At Santa Barbara FF

The prolific Martin Scorsese, one of the icons of contemporary filmmaking, continues his astonishing career output with his latest film HUGO jockeying into a top position during the current awards season. The Oscar winning director, screenwriter, producer and film historian will be honored by the Santa Barbara Film Festival with its American Riviera Award, marking the first time the award has been bestowed on a director. The director will receive his prize at a gala awards ceremony to be held on Monday, January 30 at the Arlington Theatre during the Festival’s 27th edition, which runs January 26- February 5, 2012. Scorsese is a living icon who has joined movie history as one of its most significant and influential film artists. He has been nominated for an Academy Award for Best Director seven times (this year’s HUGO may be his eighth nod), finally winning in 2007 for THE DEPARTED. Among his many honors are the Golden Lion from the Venice Film Festival (1995), the AFI Life Achievement Award (1997), Honoree at the Film Society of Lincoln Center’s 25th Gala Tribute (1998), the DGA Lifetime Achievement Award (2003), The Kennedy Center Honors (2007) and the HFPA Cecil B. DeMille Award (2010). His films stand as some of the film giants of the past 50 years, including such milestones as MEAN STREETS, TAXI DRIVER, RAGING BULL, GOODFELLAS, CASINO, GANGS OF NEW YORK, THE DEPARTED and last year’s SHUTTER ISLAND, as well as his significant “second career” as a maker of documentaries, which focus on his twin loves of cinema and music.
