Whit Stillman’s Comeback Film To Close Venice Film Festival

Written by: FFT Webmaster | July 29th, 2011

American indie pioneer Whit Stillman, who has not made a film since 1998’s THE LAST DAYS OF DISCO, will have the pride of place of the Closing Night Gala on September 10th at the Venice Film Festival with his latest film DAMSELS IN DISTRESS. Stillman, whose earlier films METROPOLITAN (1990) and BARCELONA (1994) were indie landmarks, has been living in Madrid for the past decade, where he has concentrated on his writing, producing a novel and feature stories for leading Spanish magazines. DAMSEL IN DISTRESS, which features an original script by Stillman and will make its world premiere in Venice, is a youth comedy set at a grungy American university. The film boasts a superb ensemble cast of fresh young talents including Greta Gerwig (the queen of mumblecore), Adam Brody, Carrie MacLemore, Megalyn Echikunwoke, Analeigh Tipton, Hugo Becker, Ryan Metcalf and Billy Magnussen. Sony Pictures Classics will release the film later this year.
