The Films Of Francesco Rosi at BAM

One of the last living legends of Italian cinema, 88-year-old Francesco Rosi is one of the few remaining masters of a pinnacle in Italian postwar movie culture. New York audiences will have a chance to reacquaint themselves with this film giant with a 16-film retrospective at BAMCinematek throughout the month of August. Starting out as an apprentice to legendary film director Luchino Visconti, Rosi went on to make impactful political films that still stand as powerful testaments to the cross-currents of Italian society to this day. In a career that stretched over four decades, Rosi received many honors, including a Lifetime Achievement Golden Bear at the 2008 Berlin Film Festival. Among the highlights to be screened in the series (in alphabetical order): THE CHALLENGE ((1958), CHRIST STOPPED AT EBOLI (1979), CHRONICLE OF A DEATH FORETOLD (1987), LUCKY LUCIANO (1973), THE MATTEI AFFAIR (1972), THREE BROTHERS (1981), TO FORGET PALERMO (1990) and his final film THE TRUCE (1997), with a special appearance by that film’s star actor/director John Turturro.
