Sony Pictures Classics Dominates Specialty Releases

Written by: FFT Webmaster | April 26th, 2011

After a poor showing for the 2010 Oscar winner for Best Foreign Language Film (Susanne Bier’s IN A BETTER WORLD), specialty distributor Sony Pictures Classics is doing much better with two films released this past weekend. INCENDIES, an intense Middle East-themed film by Quebec director Denis Villeneuve, that was also nominated for an Oscar, debuted on only 3 screens in New York and Los Angeles. So far, it has racked up an impressive $55,000 gross. The company’s second release of the weekend, the Morgan Spurlock documentary POM WONDERFUL PRESENTS: THE GREATEST MOVIE EVER SOLD, a satire on product placement in the movies, has logged in more than $35,000 so far, which is respectable, although way below his previous film SUPER SIZE ME. Both films will be rolling out across the country in the coming weeks.
