Screen Actors Guild Award Nominations Announced

Written by: FFT Webmaster | December 16th, 2011

While it focuses solely on performances, both individual and ensemble, the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards have emerged as a bellwether of the awards season and reinforces the reality that actors achieve their great performances in the context of their fellow actors and not as a solitary invention. The nominations list was revealed on Wednesday, December 14 at the Pacific Design Center’s Silver Screen Theater in West Hollywood. The association has picked THE ARTIST, THE HELP, THE DESCENDANTS, MIDNIGHT IN PARIS and BRIDESMAIDS as the nominees for the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture

The nominations for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Leading Role are a mix of first-timers and veterans, including Demian Bichir (A BETTER LIFE), George Clooney (THE DESCENDANTS), Leonardo DiCaprio (J. EDGAR), Brad Pitt (MONEYBALL) and Jean Dujardin (THE ARTIST).  In the Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Leading Role, nods to female thespians include Meryl Streep (THE IRON LADY), Michelle Williams (MY WEEK WITH MARILYN), Viola Davis (THE HELP), Glenn Close (ALBERT NOBBS) and Tilda Swinton (WE NEED TO TALK ABOUT KEVIN). Nominations were also announced for Supporting Actor and Actress and for actors and ensemble casts for television series. The SAG Awards 2012 winners will be announced at a ceremony at the Shrine Exposition Center in Los Angeles on Sunday, January 29, 2012. The awards event will be telecast live on TNT and TBS.
