Oscar Foreign Film Winner Continues To Expand

Despite its strong reviews and its winning of the Best Foreign Film Oscar, the fate of the Iranian film A SEPARATION has been difficult to predict. With so many Americans having a negative view of Iran at the moment, the fear was that this non-political film would be hampered by political concerns out of its control. However, this does not appear to be the case. Sony Pictures Classics, the distributor of the film, aggressively added 160 theaters this past weekend, with the film now playing on nearly 250 screens nationwide. The film grossed just over $1 million this past weekend, giving it a total of just under $4 million since its release in early January. For a film to make nearly one-third of its entire box office take at such a late date in its release is rather remarkable, and the continued positive word-of-mouth for the film nationwide should translate into a continuing uptick of tickets sold in the weeks to come. While it will probably not break records, the film looks destined to become one of the bigger foreign language grossers of the past few years.
