Karlovy Vary Film Festival Celebrates Eclectic Lineup

Written by: FFT Webmaster | June 29th, 2012

The Karlovy Vary Film Festival, set in the picturesque Czech mountain resort town and one of the oldest and most prestigious festivals in Europe, began yesterday its very eclectic lineup of international films. Running through July 7th, the Festival’s 47th edition is a typically exotic mix of veteran and up-and-coming art house directors. Among the familiar faces are Polish director Jan Jakub Kolski, who comes with TO KILL A BEAVER, the story of a paranoid war veteran who tries to shut himself off from the world; Italy’s Marco Tullio Giordana, who brings his latest, THE ITALIAN CONSPIRACY, a reconstruction of the still-unsolved terrorist attack in Milan in 1969; Czech helmer Marek Najbrt with his new film POLSKI; and  Iranian director Ali Mosaffa, who returns with THE LAST STEP, featuring Iranian actress Leila Hatami of Oscar-winner A SEPARATION.

Karlovy Vary’s competition line-up this year includes four first-timers: Ektoras Lygizos from Greece, whose BOY EATING THE BIRD’S FOOD is a radically experimental film in the vein of recent Greek titles DOGTOOTH and ATTENBERG; Austrian director Huseyin Tabak, who arrives with his debut YOUR BEAUTY IS WORTH NOTHING; Japan’s Tatsuya Yamamoto, who will premiere the existential ballad KAMIHATE STORE; and the Mexican filmmaker Lucia Carreras, the co-screenwriter of Cannes Camera d’Or winner LEAP YEAR, with her feature debut NOS VEMOS PAPA.
