Marilyn Monroe At Cannes

Written by: FFT Webmaster | May 9th, 2012

I am not sure if movie starlet Marilyn Monroe ever physically visited the Cannes Film Festival, but her films certainly did, and her old style movie glamour still does permeate the French coastal town that hosts the world’s most prestigious film festival. Well, Marilyn is back in Cannes, with the revelation of the film poster for the 65th edition of the Cannes Film Festival. In it, a film still from the 1950s is repurposed that shows the blond bombshell blowing out a candle on a birthday cake.  The choice was explained in a press release which read, “Fifty years after her death, Marilyn is still a major figure in world cinema, an eternal icon, whose grace, mystery and power of seduction remain resolutely contemporary. Each of her screen appearances sparks the imagination. The Festival poster captures Marilyn by surprise in an intimate moment where myth meets reality, a moving tribute to the 50th anniversary of her passing in 1962, which coincides with the Festival’s 65th anniversary. She enchants us with this promising gesture: a seductively blown kiss. The Festival is a temple of glamour and Marilyn is its perfect incarnation. Their coming together symbolizes the ideal of simplicity and elegance.” This year’s Cannes Film Festival runs from May 16 to 27.
