As distinct from public agencies in the United States which provide virtually no support for the development and marketing of American films, the European Union has through its refined network of funding agencies been supporting films made in Europe. This includes but is not restricted to the Brussels based MEDIA program, the European Film Promotion, federal initiatives like The German Federal Cultural Foundation, public state agencies like the large North Rhine Westphalia Film Foundation, public broadcasters like WDR or the famed French – German arte television and film consortium, to name but a few. In the case of the World Cinema Fund production backing is also granted to film makers from developing countries. This support which amounted to more than a $ 1 billion for members of the European Union covers a wide range of activities in film development, production, and distribution. This includes the training of film makers, funds for production, distribution assistance, restoration of old theatres and films, and the promotion of European films outside Europe. EFP serves 31 organizations which represent with few exceptions countries which are members of the European Union. These organizations select the films they want to present abroad.

New York: Expanding the Queens Museum of the Moving Image PDF Print E-mail
Film New York
Written by Claus Mueller | Wednesday, 21 July 2010 14:00

As the chairman of the Museum Herb Schlosser emphasized at a recent meeting when presenting a status report on the expansion project, the visual media have developed many new production and distribution technologies, expanded their reach by providing more differentiated programs, and grown in their popularity as distinct from the print media. Thus it is very difficult for any museum devoted to the visual media to remain current and contemporary. With more money and time spent by consumers on visual media and less on the traditional print media, the need for educating the public has become more urgent as has the necessity for constantly upgrading facilities. The option of specializing in one technology such as 3D or one thematic avenue like history of film would undermine the mission of providing comprehensive programs and to address complex educational needs.

Clint Eastwood

Actor, director, screenwriter, jazz musician, music composer, politician, philanthropist, film legend.....these attributes could describe a cadre of people, but when they all wrapped into one outsized personality, it is truly impressive. Such is the career of Clint Eastwood, a television and film master who remains at the top of his professional game at 80 years young. To honor the octogenarian's contribution to the history of cinema, the Film Society of Lincoln Center is devoting much of its July program to "everything Clint", including the local premiere of THE EASTWOOD FACTOR, a look at the star's life and career and his unprecedented long association with Warner Brothers studios, written and directed by famed film historian Richard Schickel.
