Hot Docs Lineup

Becoming one of the most important film events of the year in the documentary film world, the 19th edition of the Hot Docs Canadian International Documentary Festival has announced its lineup with almost 200 titles from 50 different countries. The event, which brings together documentary filmmakers, producers, distributors, programmers and festival reps will unspool in the city of Toronto from April 26 to May 6.  Festivities begin with the Canadian premiere of AI WEIWEI, an engrossing portrait of the Chinese artist/activist, which was a hit at its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. Other titles already introduced on the Festival circuit that will make their Canadian premieres at the event include THE IMPOSTER, THE QUEEN OF VERSAILLES, MARLEY, INDIE GAME: THE MOVIE and BALLROOM DANCER. The Festival also hosts a strand of Canadian documentaries (among the most respected in the world) that includes such anticipated titles as THE BASTARD SINGS THE SWEETEST SONG, THE FROG PRINCES, HERMAN’S HOUSE and THE FINAL MEMBER. Also high on the wanna-see list are films in the quirky Nightvision program, including JEFF, a biography of serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer; RADIOMAN, the story of a fixture in the New York underground film scene; and FRANCOPHENIA, a tongue in cheek, behind the scenes look at actor James Franco and his time spent working in the daytime soap opera GENERAL HOSPITAL. Hot Docs is also offering retrospective programs of the oeuvres of Emmy-winning director John Kastner and Québéc filmmaker Michel Brault.
