Countering speculation that it would move its awards to an earlier date, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences has announced that the 2013 ceremony will take place on Sunday, February 24. Nominations will be announced on January 15, and the show will once again reside at the Hollywood and Highland Center — though Kodak’s name is now off the theater. There have long been rumors the Academy would move up the show’s date, creating a major change in the awards season schedule and the promotion plans for distributors and the major studies. An AMPAS committee had been studying the feasibility of such a move, citing the fact that by the time the Oscars are given out there is a kind of “awards fatigue” in the media after the public has been deluged with other awards ceremonies, including the Golden Globes, the Screen Actors Guild Awards, the National Society Of Film Critics and other televised events, that has steadily lowered the ratings for the global telecast. However, the final conclusion is that the 2013’s telecast will take place on the last Sunday in February, just as the show has in most recent years. However, for the first time, the Oscars will introduce online voting next year, which some speculate could clear the way for an earlier show date. AMPAS may want to see how the online voting goes and then may very well make a decision to host the awards show a full month earlier.
