Frank Langella To Be Honored

Frank Langella

The Nantucket Film Festival, which runs from June 20 to 24 on the resort island off the Rhode Island coast, will honor veteran actor Frank Langella with its Compass Rose Acting Award. This award is a unique honor that recognizes an outstanding performer whose contribution to the world of acting has been profound. Langella, who comes to the Festival with the Spotlight Film ROBOT AND FRANK, a futuristic Sundance hit about an elderly thief who collaborates with his robot minder for one last caper. Langella, who has just penned a well-regarded memoir about his life in the theater and in Hollywood, will also participate in the annual In Their Shoes on-stage conversation program moderated by cable television personality Chris Mathews. Langella has had a 40+ year career on the screen, making his first impressions in back to back films in 1970: Mel Brooks’ manic take on Russian folklore, THE TWELVE CHAIRS, and the intense marital drama DIARY OF A MAD HOUSEWIFE. In 1979, he reprised his stage triumph as Count Dracula in the film version DRACULA, still considered a radical and toothily entertaining departure on the classic gothic tale. More recent roles in the films GOOD NIGHT AND GOOD LUCK (2005), STARTING OUT IN THE EVENING (2007), and his Oscar nominated turn as President Richard Nixon in FROST/NIXON (2009, a role he also originated on the stage) have cemented his position as a true actor’s actor. “Langella is one of the most respected stage and screen actors working today,” said NFF Artistic Director Mystelle Brabbée, “we are proud to honor him with this year’s Compass Rose Acting Award. In his role in Robot and Frank, he delivers some of his most robust work, playing the role with wry wit, making an authentic connection between human and machine.”
